Located in the Dumbara valley close by Kandy (6km from the centre of the city), Atugoda is poised on a hilltop that overlooks the verdant greenery of the Kandyan countryside crowned by Hunas Peak and the Knuckles range to the northeast, with views of the Hantane range and Udawattekelle sanctuary to the southwest.

Originally conceived of by an American artist in the early ‘80s, this uniquely natural setting with an attractive rustic styled dwelling and studio has been the home and workspace of a renowned Sri Lankan artist for close upon two decades.

The house consists of three connected sections with a living space, kitchen, bathroom and 3 bedrooms totalling 1500 sq.feet. Two large water tanks collect rain-water from the roof, while a municipal water connection is also installed on the land. Mains electricity is installed in the house and the studio. The studio is a separate building of 670 sq.feet in similar rustic style. The large open workspace has a high roof and overhead skylight facing north for optimum natural light conditions. Though ideal for an artist, the studio can also be converted into a workshop or activity space of any sort.

The land totals 6 acres and slopes down on either side without any other dwellings visible, emphasising an atmosphere of private sanctuary. The garden is open in parts to allow unobstructed views, while the rest has a scattered collection of coconut, jack, breadfruit, mango, mahogany and indigenous trees. The topmost part of the land hosts a bamboo grove with a small meditation hut in mud and cadjan, from which spectacular sunrises, as well as moonrises, can be viewed in various apparitions as the weather changes throughout the year.
